10 - PR & Promotion for the independent Artist - Part Two

Welcome to the IAIMA podcast!

This week we’re going to be talking about PR and promotion.  A topic that can a little off putting, make us feel a bit icky.

We all like the creative process, but this is a necessary part of being an independent artist.  How do we going about it?  How do you write a press release? How do you find a good PR company?  Which parts of the process should you pay for, and what parts are better to try and tackle yourself?

This week we give a bit of an overview on some of this, sharing some of our own experiences too.

We also include a chat we had with presenter, film maker and photographer CK Goldiing about the importance of consistently engaging with your audience.

Part two of this discussion to follow soon

05 - Femi Temowo

Femi Temowo, jazz musician, educator, producer, radio broadcaster and MD, kindly sat down with us, and graciously allowed us to ask him a bunch of questions. It was such an fun & full conversation!⁣

We spoken about his start in music, the fact that he hardly ever listened to music before he picked up an instrument is astonishing. Femi shared his experiences working with many internationally renowned artists, from George Benson, to The Roots, Courtney Pine and Amy Winehouse, and why he scaled back that work to focus on his solo career.⁣

Femi offered much advice for independent and up and coming artists. We talked about working with session musicians, and how to approach them when you have limited finances, as well as how to deal with criticism, longevity, the ep vs album and much much more.⁣

It’s so important to take every opportunity to learn from those who are further along than we are, and remaining teachable at every stage of our careers will ensure we are always growing and developing.⁣

03 - The Management Episode - Part One

Music management is something we get asked a lot about.  When do I need a manager?  What do I look for in a manager?  How do I approach management fees? etc⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So many questions for a partnership that is as unique and complex as the two individuals involved in it. We very much enjoyed chopping it all up in this episode.⁣ And as one of our co-founders, Loretta Andrews is a music manager of four artists, it seemed logical to interview her about her experiences, and ask her some of the popular questions around this topic.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Working with a manager can be extremely helpful, and a propelling next step in your career.  Ideally the addition of a manager to your team will take you further than you could have ever gone alone. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
However a couple of things that having management is not.  It's not a badge of honour, the validation that comes with it is pretty fleeting.  Also having a manager or management team is not an excuse to take your foot off the gas.  The grind continues.⁣⁣
